Topic Overview
Nouns comprise the largest group of words in the English language. A noun names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. All nouns are either singular or plural. They are also either common or proper. Nouns can be compound, combining two or more words, or collective, referring to groups or units. We also categorize nouns as concrete or abstract. Concrete nouns name things that can be experienced with the senses, and abstract nouns name things that are known by the mind but not directly perceived with the senses. Nouns can also be divided into count and noncount nouns.
