Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

Overview

This chapter begins with an overview of function operations, including composition of functions and inverses. Exponential and logarithmic functions are introduced, defined, and used in solving equations and word problems. Both common and natural logarithms are discussed.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to:

  1. Find the sum, difference, product, quotient, or composition of two functions.
  2. Find the inverse of a function, and determine whether two functions are inverse functions of each other.
  3. Calculate account balances using the compound interest formula.
  4. Answer questions relating to exponential growth and decay functions.
  5. Convert between exponential and logarithmic forms and evaluate logarithmic expressions.
  6. Write equivalent logarithmic expressions.
  7. Evaluate logarithmic expressions and solve exponential and logarithmic equations.
  8. Calculate the values of natural logarithms and solve equations that use natural logarithms.
