Overview

Students review the basic parts of speech and their uses within a sentence. Sentence structure is examined, including compound and complex arrangements. Sentence errors such as fragments and run-on sentences are reviewed, and students learn to recognize and avoid misplaced modifiers.  

What you can expect to learn

  • Define the parts of speech and identify them in a sentence. 
  • Identify prepositions, objects of prepositions, and prepositional phrases. 
  • Choose the correct verb to agree with the subject. 
  • Identify an appositive phrase.
  • Identify compound subjects and compound predicates.
  • Identify dependent and independent clauses. 
  • Identify subordinating conjunctions in dependent clauses. 
  • Distinguish between simple, compound, and complex sentence structures. 
  • Identify and revise sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and sentences that contain misplaced modifiers.
