Exploring Area and Volume

Overview

This chapter continues an exploration of geometry by presenting first the parts of a circle and then the formulas for finding the circumference and area of circular regions. Next students learn the meaning of similarity as they study similar polygons. The middle of the chapter presents the definitions and formulas for finding both surface area and volume of prisms and pyramids. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the surface area and volume of circular cylinders.

What you can expect to learn

After completing Chapter 11 you should be able to

  1. Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the area and  circumference of circles.
  2. Analyze composite figures to find missing measurements.
  3. Solve problems involving similar figures using proportions.
  4. Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving prisms, cylinders, and pyramids.
  5. Analyze a model to determine its validity.
