Overview

This chapter begins with properties of integers, including primes and composites, prime factorizations, greatest common factors, and least common multiples. Arithmetic and geometric sequences are then introduced, as well as writing, adding, and subtracting numbers in other bases.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to

  1. Determine whether a number is prime or composite.
  2. Find the prime factorization of a composite number.
  3. Use prime factorizations to find the GCF and LCM of numbers and algebraic expressions.
  4. Distinguish between arithmetic and geometric sequences.
  5. Write recursive definitions for sequences and apply them to find individual terms.
  6. Write explicit formulas for sequences and apply them to find individual terms.
  7. Express base 10 numbers in other bases and vice versa.
  8. Perform addition and subtraction in bases other than 10.
