Parts of Speech

Overview

Students continue to work on mastery of the basic parts of speech, identifying nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Verb-adverb combinations are introduced. 

What you can expect to learn

  • Categorize nouns as common or proper, count or noncount, compound or collective, and concrete or abstract. 
  • Identify pronouns as personal, indefinite, demonstrative, relative, interrogative, reflexive, intensive, or reciprocal. 
  • Correctly identify verbs as transitive, intransitive, linking, or auxiliary. 
  • Recognize and correctly use the principal parts of verbs. 
  • Locate adjectives within sentences, including determiners, articles, possessives, demonstratives, interrogatives, indefinites, modifying nouns, and proper adjectives. 
  • Locate adverbs within sentences, including qualifiers, conjunctive adverbs, relative adverbs, and interrogative adverbs. 
  • Recognize verb-adverb combinations. 
  • Locate prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections within sentences.
