Real Number Operations

This chapter begins with a review of the real number system, including number sets, unions and intersections of sets, and absolute value. There is an emphasis on arithmetic operations with rational numbers, including exponents and the order of operations. Number properties are also introduced and reviewed.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to

  1. Identify unions and intersections of sets and to distinguish between rational and irrational numbers.
  2. Find the opposite or absolute value of a number and to find the length or midpoint between two points on the number line.
  3. Add rational numbers.
  4. Subtract rational numbers.
  5. Multiply rational numbers.
  6. Divide rational numbers.
  7. Identify a property when given an example of that property.
  8. Simplify expressions containing exponents.
  9. Evaluate expressions using the order of operations.
