Introduction to Geometry

After discussing the basic geometric figures, this chapter presents information on pairs of angles, polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Students study the Pythagorean theorem, perimeter formulas, and formulas for the circumference of a circle. The chapter concludes by contrasting congruent figures with similar figures.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to

  1. Classify types of angles.
  2. Find the measures of complementary, supplementary, vertical, and corresponding angles.
  3. Classify types of polygons, find the measure of the missing angle in a triangle or quadrilateral, and find the sum of the measures of the angles of a polygon.
  4. Classify triangles and quadrilaterals.
  5. Find the length of a missing side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean theorem.
  6. Calculate the perimeter of various types of polygons.
  7. Calculate the circumference of a circle.
  8. Identify the corresponding parts of congruent triangles and quadrilaterals.
  9. Find the missing side lengths or angle measures of similar polygons.
