Factoring Polynomials

This chapter focuses on the methods of factoring polynomials. These methods include checking for common monomial factors, factoring trinomials by reversing the FOIL process, factoring by grouping, recognizing and factoring special patterns, and using combinations of these.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to

  1. Factor a common monomial factor from a polynomial.
  2. Factor a trinomial of the form x² + bx + c.
  3. Factor a trinomial of the form ax² + bx + c.
  4. Factor differences of squares and perfect square trinomials.
  5. Factor a polynomial with four terms by grouping, and be able to factor a polynomial completely.
