Rational Expressions and Equations

Overview

The first part of this chapter covers simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions, followed by solving rational equations.  Graphing reciprocal and rational functions is then covered, and the chapter concludes with solving problems involving direct, inverse, and joint variation.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to:

  1. Simplify rational expressions.
  2. Multiply or divide rational expressions.
  3. Determine the LCM of a pair of expressions and add and subtract rational expressions.
  4. Solve rational equations.
  5. Describe the translation and identify the asymptotes of reciprocal functions.
  6. Identify the asymptotes, point discontinuities, and intercepts of rational functions.
  7. Classify variations as direct, inverse, or joint and solve problems involving variations.
