This chapter introduces basic concepts, terminology, and notation of geometry, emphasizing angle relationships and polygon classifications. A variety of other basic concepts, including perimeter and circumference, congruent and similar polygons, special right triangles, distances and midpoints, and symmetry and transformations, are also covered.

What you can expect to learn

After completing these activities you should be able to

  1. Classify angles.
  2. Find the complement or supplement of an angle, and be able to find angle measures where parallel lines are intersected by a transversal.
  3. Classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and be able to find the remaining angle measure of a triangle or quadrilateral when the rest are known.
  4. Find the perimeter of a polygon and the circumference, diameter, or radius of a circle.
  5. Identify corresponding parts of congruent or similar triangles, and be able to find the measure of a side or an angle of congruent or similar triangles.
  6. Use the properties of special right triangles in order to find a missing side length.
  7. Find the distance or the midpoint between two points.
