English 4 (3rd edition) serves to develop the correct use of English grammar in written and oral communication. Students review grammatical concepts such as basic parts of speech and proper sentence structure. Writing projects serve to put these skills to use in practical ways.
Chapter 1 focuses on sentences. Students will learn about the parts of sentences, types of sentences, and simple and compound sentences. They will also practice recognizing and correcting fragments. Prepositions and prepositional phrases are introduced at the end of the chapter.
In Chapter 3, the students will learn about different types of nouns along with the spelling, punctuation, and capitalization rules for proper nouns, abbreviations, plural nouns, and possessive nouns.
In Chapter 5, the students will learn about main verbs and helping verbs, simple and progressive verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and irregular verbs.
In Chapter 6, students will learn about different patterns that English sentences can have. Students will also learn some frequently confused verbs and practice using them correctly. The chapter will invite students to think about the importance of language patterns and rules in clear communication and challenge them to think about the importance of correct word choice in communicating truthfully.
In Chapter 8, the students will learn to recognize and use various types of pronouns.
In Chapter 9, the students will learn about different types of adjectives and adverbs and practice using them correctly.
In Chapter 11, students will learn about phrases and clauses, sentences and fragments, subordinating conjunctions, and complex sentences. The chapter also includes several rules for using commas in sentences.
