Chemistry gives students the tools to build an understanding of atomic structure, chemical composition, and chemical reactions; and it helps students discover how this understanding can be used to help people who bear God's image.
Chapter 2 is foundational, though it mostly reviews concepts and terms studied in earlier science courses. A clear understanding of matter’s composition, physical and chemical properties, and changes in response to energy is critical for this course. The kinetic-molecular theory is a foundation on which other chemical theories are built.
Chapter 3 is foundational because mathematics is one of the most important tools in science. This chapter demonstrates many of the mathematical skills that students will need throughout their study of chemistry. A Christian working in science has the responsibility to be accurate and honest in all his actions. The proper use of math is part of that responsibility.
Chapter 4 is foundational and begins the study of topics specific to chemistry. The development of the atomic model is described, and the student is guided to discover how and why the model had to change. This historical study emphasizes the model-making nature of science.
Chapter 10 contains foundational material. Understanding the signs that indicate a chemical reaction has occurred, knowing how to write and balance chemical equations, and being able to distinguish types of reactions are essential for describing how atoms react with one another.
Chapter 11 is foundational. Students will learn the basics of analyzing chemical reactions, a necessary skill for the study of stoichiometry.
Chapter 12 has key material that covers the chemistry of gases. The chapter builds upon the concepts of gas properties and laws learned in previous physical science coursework and adds to these an introduction to gas stoichiometry.
Chapter 14 is a foundational chapter that covers material on solutions. Students should already be familiar with a wide variety of solutions encountered in everyday life. Throughout the chapter students will discover what makes something a solution and how to determine the amount of substances that are within a solution. Knowing the properties of solutions and the measures of concentration is essential to understanding the concepts covered in future chapters.
Chapter 15 has key material. In this chapter students will predict whether a reaction will occur by applying their knowledge of thermochemistry. It is important for students to have a firm understanding of the mole concept from Chapter 11 before engaging with this material. Students will use their understanding of moles and thermochemistry to calculate the enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of reactions.
The two preceding chapters focused on whether and how fast a reaction will occur. Chapter 17 addresses how many reactant particles will be transformed into product particles. The chapter dispels the common misconception that all reactions proceed in a forward direction to completion, using up all the reactants and leaving only products.
Chapter 18 contains key material. Acids, bases, and salts are important industrial chemicals and play significant roles in the biochemistry of living things.
Chapter 22 has enrichment material that will challenge students to think on a different level of chemistry. Nuclear chemistry is different from other branches of chemistry because of the transformation of one element into another. This area of chemistry overlaps significantly with nuclear physics. Radon detection, radiation therapy, x-rays, nuclear power plants, and nuclear waste disposal are just a few examples of how nuclear chemistry affects modern life.
