Writing and Grammar 7 (4th edition) provides students with a basis for a clear understanding of basic English grammar and for increasing proficiency in the use of English. Parts of speech are reviewed thoroughly and students review the sentence patterns in order to better understand sentence structure. The many categories of pronouns are reviewed and chapters on usage and agreement help the student build a firm foundation for writing. A study of modifiers, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections rounds out the parts of speech, and chapters on capitalization and punctuation provide ample practice in those areas.
Students review the four types of sentences. They then practice finding the simple subjects and simple predicates of sentences. Students review how to recognize and correct fused sentences, comma splices, and fragments.
Students review verbs and their classifications, distinguishing between an action verb and a linking verb. Students learn to distinguish between a transitive and an intransitive verb, and learn to identify direct objects and indirect objects. Sentence patterns are introduced. Students will also distinguish between predicate nouns and predicate adjectives in sentences with linking verbs. New terminology is introduced for helping verbs, and verb tense is reviewed.
Four forms of nouns are reviewed: the singular, the singular possessive, the plural, and the plural possessive. Attention is given to forming the plurals of nouns and possessive nouns. Common and proper nouns are distinguished. A new set of categories for nouns is added: count and noncount.
Students will review what pronouns and antecedents are. Several classifications of pronouns are examined: personal, demonstrative, interrogative, reflexive, intensive, and indefinite.
Adjectives and the words that they modify are reviewed. Students learn how to use the comparative forms of adjectives correctly within sentences. Special adjectives are explained, and pronouns in the possessive form are introduced.
Students will recognize adverbs and the words that they describe. Adverbs in several different positions within a sentence are studied. The correct usage of comparative and superlative forms of adverbs is practiced. Students will be able to distinguish between adjectives and adverbs.
Students will practice finding prepositions, their objects, and whole prepositional phrases. The functions of prepositional phrases as adjectives or adverbs will be examined as well. Appositives are also introduced.
Students review the difference between a phrase and a clause. Distinguishing dependent clauses from independent clauses helps to cement an understanding of sentence structure. Simple, compound, and complex sentence structures are examined.
Students will review subject-verb agreement, and will practice agreement with indefinite pronouns and with compound subjects. Looking at special situations such as intervening phrases, predicate nouns of a different number, and inverted order will help to solidify the understanding of agreement.
The study of agreement is furthered by an examination of pronouns and their antecedents. Indefinite pronouns as antecedents are introduced.
Students learn how to use pronouns correctly in both their subjective and objective cases. Difficult pronouns such as we, us, who, and whom are practiced. Possessive pronouns with contractions that are homonym pairs are explained. Students continue to work with reflexive and intensive pronouns. Students also are introduced to the idea of using clear pronoun reference.
Students review the proper use of ending marks for sentences and learn other uses for the period. The proper usage of commas is emphasized, and semicolons and colons are introduced. Correct use of quotation marks, apostrophes, and hyphens is also taught.
Capitalization rules for proper nouns are reviewed, detailing many instances in which these rules are applied. Proper adjectives are also addressed, and students learn to identify common nouns that are often incorrectly capitalized.
