Parts of Speech

Overview

A thorough review of the basic parts of speech is given, with students identifying nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Relative and reciprocal pronouns are added, and conjunctive adverbs are introduced. Students review verbals and also learn what perfect gerunds and passive infinitives do. 

What you can expect to learn

  • Identify all eight basic parts of speech within a sentence. 
  • Distinguish between compound and collective nouns. 
  • Distinguish between concrete and abstract nouns.
  • Classify pronouns as personal, demonstrative, interrogative, indefinite, reflexive, intensive, relative, or reciprocal. 
  • Understand the principal parts of verbs. 
  • Recognize adjectives and adverbs within a sentence. 
  • Properly identify and use prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
